A photography contest has been launched by a non-profit organisation to help raise awareness about the importance and scarcity of water around the globe.

There are several water-based shooting challenges with categories in the competition including a single drop of water, water in our daily lives, waterscapes and clean water initiatives.

Organisers, Statement Arts, say they hope the competition -- where entry is $25 with a $3,500 prize fund -- will help raise money to fund their "awareness and education programme".

All photo entries are available for viewing on the 'Single Drop of Water' website and when judges pick the winners, they will be exhibited in New York.

A spokesperson said: "Water. No other natural resource is more important to us. We are looking for images that capture this essential element, and celebrate its beauty."
