Silent cameras spark voyeurism rise in Japan

The sale of photography apps which enable mobile phone cameras to operate silently has blamed for a rise in illicit images taken in Japan.

Last year there were apparently 1,741 incidents of photographic voyeurism -- an increase of 60% compared with five years ago.

Reports say Japanese academics have called for regulation of silent photography applications - claiming that they are being used for crimes.

Some of the apps even have functions which display a webpage or email on the screen as the camera is operating, making taking photos on the sly even easier.
